Exploring Ultrarunning Locations near Damascus Virginia

If you're a trail runner or outdoor enthusiast looking to explore beautiful trails, Damascus Virginia is a hidden gem that deserves your attention. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, this charming town is a gateway to the best ultrarunning in the region. Whether you're training for your next ultra race, FKT, or simply looking to enjoy Southwest Virginia's Outdoors, these trails are sure to bring you joy.

The Appalachian Trail

One of the most iconic ultrarunning routes in Damascus is naturally the Appalachian Trail (AT). Spanning nearly 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine, the AT runs right thru Damascus, making it an easy to access spot for long or short distance runs. The Section of the AT around Damascus includes a climb out of town either direction, then rolling hills for miles, with stunning views of the surrounding blue ridge mountains. Damascus is often hailed as the "Friendliest Town on the AT", by runners and hikers alike. For more info the Appalachian Trail Conservancy offers up to date information on safety, trail closures, shuttles, and any other important information.

Virginia Creeper Trail

Right through the heart of town the Virginia Creeper Trail is another fantastic option for runners of all types. This 34.3 mile rail trail is the perfect blend of easy running and cushy trail. While Hurricane Helene damaged about half of the trail, reconstruction is under process already! The perfect place to start is at the Creeper Trail Cottages owned by local runner's and race directors who can give all sorts of running inspiration and advice. The Creeper Trail is surrounded by lush forests, meandering creeks, and spring thru autumn boasts the best wildflower displays around.

The lack of steep grades makes the Creeper Trail an ideal location to log bigger miles without too much strain. It's easy accessibility can help you customize a run to perfect fit your training plan. And finally a huge winning point for me, the Creeper Trail is easy enough for kids to bike, and outdoor enthusiasts at all fitness levels to access making it the perfect place for families.

Whitetop Mountain aka Meadow Mountain

For those seeking a more challenging terrain, Whitetop Mountain is my families favorite adventure location. As the second highest independent peak at 5,525 feet (1,684 meters) in Virginia, the trails around Whitetop provide steep ascents and buttery smooth descents. Its the perfect retreat for runners looking to build strength, speed, and endurance. The views from just below the summit to Buzzard Rock are unparalleled, and with multiple routes to the top you can pick between easy gravel roads or technical trails.

Our family often camps, hikes, and trail runs on Meadow Mountain, it's also popular for gravel cyclists and touring motorcyclists

When you get to Whitetop take note of unique wildlife, bountiful wild berries, and some of the most dramatic "seasonal" changes in all of Virginia. Be sure to plan for wet weather as often clouds will catch on the mountain top leaving summit goers in a mist on an otherwise dry day.

Grayson Highlands State Park

Just a few minutes from Damascus Virginia, Grayson Highlands is a must visit for all runners and outdoor lovers. The park is famous for its adorable wild ponies ( don't feed or pet please - let's keep them wild and healthy together), stunning panoramic views, and vast trail systems. The AT passes through the park leaving the perfect 50k run from Grayson to Damascus as a great 1 way route option.
