In the chaos of modern adulthood and parenting, finding space and time for personal pursuits can feel like a daunting task in itself. Between kids in day care or school, homework help ( in my case homeschooling), managing households, and juggling career life many people especially those of us who are caregivers struggle to carve out moments for themselves, much less pursue a passion like running trails!
However, the benefits of getting and maintaining fitness - both for physical and mental well being, are undeniable. With 20+years coaching, I specialize in ultra and trail running and wellness coaching, and I'm writing today to show you how you can integrate this sport into your busy life!

Why Trail Running?
Ultra and trail running, despite the name - aren't just about the distance. They are about the experience. Enjoy stepping off the treadmill or sidewalk onto a winding trail, surrounded by natures beauty. It's an escape from the daily grind, offering a chance to recharge mentally and physically. For caregivers especially, this can be transformative. The fresh air, the sounds of nature, and the thrill of hitting a new distance or pace can provide a much needed break from routine while fostering discipline, resilience, and a sense of achievement.
Additionally, running on the trail can offer more flexibility than traditional track and road racing. Many people have the bonus of accessible trails, that they can explore conveniently. You can start with short runs, and gradually build up to longer distances as your body adapts. This adaptability makes it an ideal "sport" of choice for busy parents who want to prioritize their mental and physical health with a sport that doesn't require a sacrifice of family time.
Coaching tailored to fit you.
As a seasoned coach ( and sandwich generationer), I understand some of the unique challenges many of you face. My coaching programs is designed "backwards" of many coaches - around peoples unique lives and schedules first - then to fit their goals.
Here's how we can make it work:
- Personalization: Everyone's schedule is unique. I create a customized plan that aligns with your weekly plans, allowing you to train effectively without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you have 30 minutes or 3 hours, we can maximize what works for you in this season. ( And if you have no time on the calendar - I'm happy to provide a life scheduling overhaul to carve it out )
- Flexible Scheduling: Life as an adult and for those of us who are caregivers is unpredictable. That's why your plan will be adaptable. If you need to shift a run or skip the gym, I will adjust your plan in real time as hiccups happen so we can make forward progress regardless of the curveballs life is throwing your way.
- Focus on Safety: Trail / Ultra running comes with unique challenges, from personal safety concerns, to varying terrains, weather, and elevation changes. I'll teach you the essential techniques for navigating the trails safely, ensuring you enjoy your runs as safely as possible.
- Mental Resilience Training: Running is as much a mental challenge as it is physical. I provide strategies to build mental toughness, helping you build confidence as you overcome obstacles both on the trails and in life.
- Community: Running, like life doesn't have to be a solitary endeavor. I encourage participation in local run clubs, group runs, and local races. They will not only provide motivation, but help you facilitate a network of support among like minded individuals. Sharing experiences and challenges with others makes the journey more enjoyable for many! - The author and a running friend in Grayson Highlands State Park on a weekend long run.
Benefits of Running for Everyone.
Integrating running consistently has numerous benefits that extend beyond fitness. Here are a few reasons to stay on the move.
- Improved Health: Regular physical activity can boost your energy levels, improve mood, and enhance overall health. As a busy adult, feeling your best can make all the difference in your personal and professional life.
- Stress Relief: Running is a proven stress reliever. The rhythmic motion, combined with the serene environment of nature, can help clear your mind and reduce anxiety.
- Role Modeling: By prioritizing your health and fitness, you can set a powerful example for children, family members, coworkers, and your extended community. They see first hand the importance of self care and pursuing passions, encouraging them to lead more active balanced lives.
- Achievement and Confidence: Completing a race or surviving a killer workout can significantly boost your self esteem. These achievements serve as reminders of what you can accomplish, inspiring you to tackle other challenges in life with a better mindset.
