Why Trail Runners Love Crystal Springs

Reflecting on what makes this race more than just miles in the woods for trail runners.

When we launched the race at Crystal Springs, our goal was simple: to create a meaningful, challenging, and community-centered experience for runners at every level. After wrapping up the 2024 race weekend, we felt the energy, gratitude, and inspiration from the runners who showed up, gave their all, and left us with memories and thoughtful reflections.

One of our 2024 participants shared this message after the race:

"Thank you for your time and thoughtfulness in organizing the race at Crystal Springs. I’m relatively new to trail running and thought you guys did a wonderful job with the course and aid stations. The messages on the bibs was a very nice touch and something I have not seen in any race I have done, and the idea of the accountability rocks was very creative. I look forward to next year's race..."

These words capture so much of what we hoped to build. So what exactly makes Crystal Springs stand out in a growing field of trail races? Here’s what we’re hearing from runners and why we think trail runners are coming back:

A Course That Balances Challenge and Beauty

Whether you're a trail veteran or just stepping off the roads, the Crystal Springs course offers a mix of tough climbs, fast descents, and scenic ridge lines. Runners like Chad appreciate the thoughtful course design and the opportunity to “fly” on segments like the High Rocks descent. We're already exploring ways to accommodate more runners while keeping those trails flowing freely.

Dialed-In Aid Stations and Support

Trail races are only as strong as their aid stations and our volunteers knocked it out of the park. With well-stocked support and friendly faces at every turn, runners felt seen, supported, and cared for throughout the race.

Meaningful Details that Matter to Trail Runners

One of the most talked-about aspects? The handwritten messages on each runner’s bib and the inspirational accountability rocks, offering encouragement, inspiration, and connection. It was a small gesture that turned out to be a big deal...creating a personal moment for every athlete.

The Accountability Rocks

In a sport built on grit and character, the Accountability Rocks were introduced as a symbol of intention. They were a way of reminding runners that the reasons we run go deeper than finish lines, distances, and times. Whether a private promise or public goal, the act of carrying the rock was one many runners took to heart.

Community Energy from Start to Finish

From the shuttle rides to the final finishers, the race brought together runners, volunteers, and local leaders, including a parks and rec director who’s just as excited about this year's race as we are. We’re building something lasting and it’s not just about running.

Looking Ahead

We have plans to improve flow on the loop, expand High Rocks access, and keep the spirit of Crystal Springs rooted in creativity, inclusion, and community.

Whether it’s your first trail race or your fiftieth, Crystal Springs is the kind of race that leaves a mark on your legs, in your heart, and maybe even written on your bib.

We can’t wait to see you in August.
